Establish deadlines.
Despite the adrenaline and stress that come with preparing for a deadline, for many of us it is exactly what works. A deadline gets us going; it practically forces us to make that commitment to start and finish something. It is also another opportunity to hold ourselves accountable. We might be willing to let ourselves down, but we are much less willing to let someone else down.
When a paper was due in collegeâthe source of one too many all-nighters for meâI made the time to get it done. I would rather go through the resistance and fear around writing the paper than live with the disappointment and shame that would come from not following through, or worse, getting an F as my grade.
Although many artistsâmyself includedâuse deadlines frequently as the fire-starter to their creativity, they can also be a major cause of burnout. Experiencing this kind of adrenaline rush, plus the accompanying stress, gets old after a while. So I want to offer you the encouragement that will build a strong foundation and sustain a long and inspired creative life, but if you need a push to get you started, then by all means, choose a deadline and get going!
Itâs important to note that a deadline alone does not bring about that kind of crazy stress; itâs how we choose to work within that deadline that creates the stress. A little writing every day creates a book. A little painting every day creates a body of work for a portfolio or a show. Tackling little bits of a project daily can be a lot easier than tackling an entire project all at once.
